Panchayat election symbols 2026 — sarpanch, panch, panchayat samiti and zila parishad (Rajasthan)

Sarpanch and panch polls are not fought on party symbols — every candidate gets a free symbol from the State Election Commission's list. Panchayat samiti and zila parishad member polls are party-based: a recognised party's candidate gets the party symbol, others get the Commission's free symbols. All lists below are from the Commission's notifications 4191 and 4196 of 17 October 2025.

For the 2026 Rajasthan panchayat polls there are 40 free symbols for sarpanch and 40 for panch (SEC notification 4191). Independent panchayat samiti candidates have 20 free symbols and zila parishad candidates 20, while the symbols of the BJP (lotus), Congress (hand), BSP (elephant), AAP (broom), CPI(M), NPP, RLP (bottle) and Bharat Adivasi Party (hockey and ball) are reserved for their candidates (notification 4196).

How symbols are allotted

Sarpanch and panch: each candidate is allotted one symbol from the Commission's list above (Panchayati Raj Election Rules 29(3) and 56; notification 4191). In 2026 the sarpanch/panch ballot carries the printed symbols and the polling party writes in the candidates' names by hand (SEC order 9809).

Panchayat samiti and zila parishad (notification 4196):

  • A party candidate gets only the party's reserved symbol — provided the nomination declares it and Forms 'Ka' and 'Kha', signed in ink by the party's state president (or their authorised person), reach the returning officer by 3 PM on the last day of nominations. Fax, e-mail, WhatsApp or rubber-stamp signatures are not accepted.
  • Independents list three preferred symbols in their first nomination paper. If only one candidate asked for a first-choice symbol, they get it; if more did, lots are drawn in front of the candidates and their agents.
  • The same is then done for second and third choices; anyone still without a symbol (or who gave no choice) gets the topmost unallotted symbol in the list, one by one in the Hindi alphabetical order of names.
  • No symbol outside the list can be claimed; the returning officer's allotment is final, though the Commission can revise it.
